Please join the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education and the Society for Jewish Thought as we host Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik. The back side of every piece of American currency proclaims, "In God We Trust." Our Presidents almost universally close their major speeches by saying "God Bless the United States of America." We still largely adhere to the custom of witnesses and elected officials swearing on the Bible. All these signs suggest that America is one of the most religious countries in the developed world. And yet we have seen a sharp increase in the number of people who do not identify with any religion. Is America undergoing a major cultural transformation? Would such a change be a welcome one or a threatening one to America's civic health? Hamilton Center Professor Darren Staloff and Yeshiva University Professor Meir Soloveichik will discuss the place of religion in America for the founders of the country and use this historical context to sharpen the question about religion's future - and America's.
