Patrick Callahan

Predoctoral Fellow

Patrick Callahan is an America in the World Consortium Predoctoral Fellow at the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education. He is a Classics PhD Candidate at UCLA, where he has assisted in teaching the department’s undergraduate courses as well as a summer study abroad program in Rome (2023).

In 2021, Patrick presented his MA paper on Pliny the Younger, showing how his second letter collection intentionally mimics aspects of a Roman dinner party. Inspired by Pliny’s conviviality, Patrick has attempted to reflect it in his own academic work, presenting conference papers on the archaic Greek poet Alcaeus (2022) and the Socratic philosopher Dio Chrysostom (2023). He is currently writing a dissertation on the role of laughter in Cicero’s letters, under the supervision of Dr. Francesca Martelli.

A native of Kansas City, Patrick received BAs in English and Classical Philology from the University of Dallas (2019), then moved from one big state to another. He looks forward to becoming a Florida Gator for the 2024-25 academic year.
