Alexander Lowie

Postdoctoral Fellow
CSE E555
Alexander is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education. He received his PhD in Cultural Anthropology in the Spring of 2024 from the University of Florida, where he completed his dissertation titled, The Way of the (Civil) Warrior: An Ethnography of the Contemporary Alt-Right and Patriot Movement in Florida. In this narrative ethnographic project, Alexander interviewed members of the Proud Boys and Three-Percenters to gain a socio-cultural understanding of their beliefs and political activism, as well as how they fit into the broader contemporary “Patriot Movement” across the United States. His research interests focus on myth, nationalism, memory, and how smaller political movements interact broadly with American society.
Alexander’s other work has focused on the analysis of his grandfather’s Vietnam War archive of photos and letters. He specifically looked at how families create stories and myths to explain their generational inheritances. This archive has inspired a conference presentation titled, The Projector and its Family, as well as an upcoming multimedia project titled, Dearest Suzie. He is interested in the United States and how people in the US create myths to make sense of their perceptions of themselves and their communities.
He is a native Central Floridian and received his BA and MA from the University of Florida. When he is not working, you can find Alexander either playing volleyball or reading science fiction.
